PPG24, advice AND sound testing

Not only do we perform PPG24 traffic, rail and aircraft surveys to help you get planning permission but we can also advise on internal acoustics and offer an accredited sound insulation testing service. We can check your design, review your drawings and provide sound insulation recommendations to help you pass the sound insulation tests first time round. We aim to provide you with cost-effective and sound solutions. We aim to give you the best prices for sound testing and PPG24 traffic, rail and aircraft noise surveys. We do not sub-contract sound testing or PPG24 surveys to other companies. This way we can be certain of the quality of service you will receive. We are members of the IOA, the ANC and we are ANC registered sound testers. See our sound testing page for more information.

PPG24 Assessments by Sound Acoustics Ltd

Planning Policy Guidance 24: Planning and Noise or PPG24 for short is a document widely used in the planning process for deciding the suitability of locations for proposed housing developments. Sound Acoustics Ltd is a member of the Association of Noise Consultants and is suitably qualified to carry out your PPG24 survey and assessment. Our service begins with a review of the proposed drawings followed by a day and night-time survey of the existing noise climate at the proposed development site. This is normally a survey of traffic noise, rail noise or aircraft noise. An assessment is then carried out to determine the suitability of the land for housing. This is done by identifying Noise Exposure Categories or NEC and the resulting implications:

NEC A Noise need not be considered as a determining factor in granting planning permission, although the noise level at the high end of the category should not be regarded as a desirable level.

NEC B Noise should be taken into account when determining planning applications and, where appropriate, conditions imposed to ensure an adequate level of protection against noise.

NEC C Planning permission should not normally be granted. Where it is considered that permission should be given, for example because there are no alternative quieter sites available, conditions should be imposed to ensure a commensurate level of protection against noise.

NEC D Planning permission should normally be refused.

Once the assessment has been performed we can report our findings and depending on which Noise Exposure Category the land is in give guidance on suitable attenuation measures including acoustic glazing and ventilation, orientation of the building, distance and screening. On sites where the existing traffic, rail or aircraft noise levels limit the amount of development careful combination of the above attenuation measures can maximise the land usage for dwellings.
